Being secular involves different things:
- It is when something is not connected with religious or spiritual matters.
- It is being concerned with worldly (or real) things.
- It implies a freedom from religion.
- It applies to individuals, institutions, societies and government.
- It implies deriving things from naturalistic and scientific explanations.
- It is a separation of church and state, but may be broadened to include the removal of religion from any public endeavor.
Technically, someone can be secular and religious. A religious person can believe that there should be a separation of church and state, however it is much more likely that a religious person will believe that (their) religion should influence other people and other aspects of life and society.
The primary goal of this web site is to assist in the removal of religion from society, however it has a secondary goal of helping individuals to remove religion from themselves. The site aims to demonstrate why religion is an atrocious concept for a society, but also why it is a terrible thing for an individual. Unfortunately, religion will persist (at least for a while), however if someone must be religious, then it is important that it should remain a private thing for that individual and not affect or influence anyone else.
An atheist is someone who does not believe in a god or gods. It is hugely likely that an atheist will believe in a secular society.
The word “secular” comes from the Latin word saeculum, meaning “a generation”, “an age”, or “a century” (i.e. concepts of time). Its original use was to separate the everyday world (which obviously involves concepts of time) from the realm of the gods (which is supposedly eternal and not as concerned with time). The modern usage is derived from that separation.
