One of the key messages from any religious person is the concept that their god has a plan. The plan often involves concepts of atonement for “sin” else there’ll be punishment.

The punishment is usually along the lines of eternal damnation or suffering, however the religious are not adverse to interpreting bad outcomes (to others) as little preliminary slices of that damnation. That suggests that they believe that their god is having hands-on participation with people’s lives.
