The topic of “beginning” is not an easy thing to explore, so you can imagine how bewildering it must have been to the ignorant and superstitious men who wrote the various religious texts thousands of years ago. Still, it didn’t bother them too much because they knew they didn’t have to write anything too profound for the ignorant and superstitious readers of their words.
Despite the various texts supposedly being the words of the omniscient beings in the universe, not one of them gives the slightest clue into actual beginnings. It’s almost like they were not written by omniscient beings; instead, they look more like the ramblings of ordinary men who knew nothing (which is the truth).
It’s worth looking more closely at the origin stories of the major religions because if you do, you’ll start to realize their fundamental problem: i.e. that they are attempting to explain what is not possible for humans of the past to explain.
Christianity
So everyone knows that Christianity says that everything came from a few words: “In the beginning god created the heaven and the earth”. What no Christian will ever elaborate upon is how those words originated, i.e. who created god and the matter that god used to “create” the universe we see today? Christians will say things like “god is eternal” and “god is all powerful”, etc. but that doesn’t explain anything. It’s awful how Christians will accuse scientists of not knowing how everything began, but at the same time they are willing to hand-wave away the very same problem when it is turned inwards on their own beliefs. The “god-done-it” philosophy will never develop beyond it’s hopeless current state. No one is going to find another chapter for any religion that suddenly explains all about our beginnings. That’s got to be pretty frustrating for the average religious person. One does wonder why their omniscient friend has deserted them when it comes to knowledge?
One thing that Christians are fond of saying is that if there is a design, then there must have been a designer. It that’s the case, then who designed the designer? So there’s an even more powerful god out there who created your god? That’s not as far fetched as Christians would like to believe because your very own god believed that there were other gods. If you don’t believe that, then you haven’t read your bible, e.g. see zephaniah 2:11. Or would you prefer to believe that ordinary men wrote the bible?
The book of genesis (a page on this site) is where it all starts for Christians, and the following article looks at the very many problems present in the start of that book.
(Other religions coming soon…)
Contrast what the various religions try to tell us about how the universe came to be with what science tells us, and there’s no comparison. Religions have long since exhausted their usefulness in explaining things, however science is just warming up. The topic of real “beginning” is covered elsewhere on this site (coming soon…).
